Washington County K-12 schools are located in each of the five communities of Leroy, Millry, McIntosh, Chatom, and Fruitdale. One unique aspect about Washington County schools is the opportunity for students to graduate with skills that allow for their employment with local industry.
The Washington County Career Technical Center allows students to work for a diploma while acquiring state-of-the-art technical skills. Students are treated as employees so that they can learn to be motivated, self-directed and prepared to follow basic employer expectations.
The Washington County Career Technical Center offers the following programs:
Industrial Maintenance Technology is our newest program and will be taught beginning in the 2009/2010 school year. This program provides classroom and shop experience in current and emerging technologies in industrial maintenance. Funding for this program is made possible by the Ciba Foundation.
The Business/Computer course prepares the students for careers in office occupations. To enhance the employability of business students, word processing, database, spreadsheet, and Powerpoint concepts are taught using the computer.
Drafting and Design is taught using the AutoCAD system, which is essential to all engineering, architectural and any other drafting career.
A welding course includes the cutting, fitting and joining of metals by using various tools, and equipment. Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to pass a welding test with any construction company. Students are offered dual-enrollment with Bishop State Community College while attending the Washington County Career Technical Center for this program.
The carpentry course teaches the student basic shops skills, hand tool safety, and other layout skills used in organizing carpentry jobs. Safety is stressed in all phases of instruction.
At each of the five high schools, technical programs in Family and Consumer Science are taught. Areas of focus include Early Childhood Education, Culinary Arts, and Agriscience.
